The Shockoe Institute

Team Henry Enterprises is honored to contribute to the creation of the Shockoe Institute, the gateway to the larger Shockoe Heritage Campus. Located within the historic Main Street Station Trainshed, this 12,300-square-foot interpretive center will serve as a cornerstone for exploring Richmond’s pivotal role in the domestic trade of enslaved Africans.

We are thrilled the City of Richmond has selected Team Henry to build the Shockoe Institute. Alongside our world-renowned exhibition design partners Local Projects, Team Henry will bring the kind of high-quality construction capability and expertise critical to ensuring that the Shockoe Institute can meet its mission. The City’s agreement with Team Henry represents a critical step toward our goal of opening the Institute to the public by 2026.
Funded by an $11 million grant from the Mellon Foundation, the Shockoe Institute will house immersive exhibits that guide visitors through the transatlantic and domestic slave trade, connecting personal stories to the broader history of Richmond and Shockoe Valley. The space will include galleries, reflective memorials like the Hush Arbor and reflecting pool, and connectivity spaces that foster movement and dialogue.
Designed as a place of learning, reflection, and connection, the Shockoe Institute will anchor visitors' journeys through the 10-acre Heritage Campus, offering a transformative experience that honors the resilience and legacy of those whose stories shaped this site.
